About Kelsey

Kelsey is an upper level event rider from Charlotte, NC, currently based in Middleburg, Virginia. She competes at the CCI** level on The Gentleman Pirate, a Thoroughbred gelding she purchased at the racetrack as a 3-yr-old in 2006 and brought along herself. Together the two have an impressive record, having had much success despite what should have been a career-ending injury for Pirate – a broken neck sustained in a pasture accident in 2013.  She was never supposed to ride him again but refused to lose faith in her partner.  Pirate defied all the odds and recovered fully, making a brilliant comeback to the upper levels in 2014.

Kelsey’s eventing career began on Aladdin’s Treasure, a 13.2 hand high Arabian pony she was given as a small child. Her interest in eventing was sparked while watching the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, when she decided at the age of 8 what she wanted to do with her life. Since that age, her focus has never wavered from this goal. Though she received little formal training throughout her career with “Laddy,” the pair was extremely successful through Training level (many wins, includinKelseySouthern8th0035g the Area 3 Championships, and a top 10 placing in the American Eventing Championships) and Kelsey began to ride and compete for clients at a young age. She leased a farm in 2004 and soon began purchasing horses off the racetrack to retrain, compete, and sell.  Pirate was one she decided never to sell.

In addition to Pirate, Kelsey actively trains and competes client horses, with a true talent for starting and bringing along youngsters, and retraining off-the-track Thoroughbreds.  She is also a licensed steeplechase trainer and enjoys her involvement in the racing world.

Currently based in the Middleburg, Virginia area, Kelsey accepts horses in training geared both at eventing and steeplechasing. She is also available for backing youngsters, teaching lessons and clinics, and coaching at events.  Winters are spent in her lovely facility south of Charlotte, NC, where she travels to teach regular clinics.  She has trained with eventing legend Bruce Davidson Sr, British CCI**** rider Francis Whittington, Rolex winner Tiffani Loudon-Meetze, and was most recently offered a position with Olympian Phyllis Dawson, moving Pirate to her farm in Virginia.
